Obese America eating away the World?

modern_obese_americans

60% of US Americans are overweight.

It might be a cheap shot: but I really think that fat America is literally eating away the worlds resource in a devastating and unfair way. Not only is it unhealthy for the people themselves, but also the food production and distribution wastes many resources. Plus obese people need bigger cars and seats in airplanes – and more fuel is needed to get them from A to B. Obviously most obese people walk less, therefore more transportation in ‘obese’ cars like SUVs is needed.

For example China is now #2 in fuel consumption – but that is for a billion people compared to ‘only’ 300 million in the US. Many Africans would happily live on a third or even a quarter of the calories many Americans stuff into themselves on a daily basis. So Americans proportionally use more resources than anybody else on this planet.

So the obesity of a rich country has far more consequences then just fat people. It’s a waste of precious resources on a colossal scale – and one of the biggest challenges ALL industrial nations are facing, because obesity is already becoming a problem in other places as well – but with so many things America is ahead of the World.

Loose some fat and save resources for your fellow humans.

'Obese America eating away the World?'

All too true.

In ‘96 I spent a week in three weeks in Israel and Egypt. My first excursion out of the States. I thoroughly enjoyed it!

Two days before leaving, sitting at a table of an outdoor restaurant in Cairo, I did a double-take on a person… because he was FAT! Only then did I realize that I hadn’t seen a fat person the whole time I’d been gone. And guess what? He was an American!

Dieter, she is hot. You really do like your girls on the plump side! ;>)

@Neugen: Thanks for your comment. I am always amazed how these obese people travel. I am a fat guy myself and I find hard to be squeezed into a plane seat for more than an hour …

@RichM: Didn’t I introduce to my new girlfriend? ;-)

Like too many Americans I am overweight. But, while grazing at one of my favorite smorgasboards I took the occassion to observe my fellow grazers and their grazing habits. Among the things I noticed was how truly huge so many of these people were. I mean huge to the point where they could no longer walk normally. And it was not just a few people. Maybe the idea that if they paid just a fixed price for the cost of entry so they could eat all they wanted was the attraction for the gathering of the behemoths. The next thing I noticed was how full they made their plates. Utterly amazing! I was often surprised that none of the food fell of as they returned to their tables. It kind of made me self conscious that I would be at this place myself. The main attraction for me is that the price of admission is cheap as compared to most sit down restaurants and each member of the family can choose what they want to eat. We seem to be eating ourselves to death.

@RichM: Thanks for your honest and insightful comment. When I lived in the US I was always stunned by the HUGE plates. It’s certainly good value for the money. But I simply can’t shovel all those calories down – just because I paid for it.

I dunno, but do you think most people judge Restaurants rather by the quantity of the food instead of the quality of the Diner?

Certainly, if you are looking for a dining experience most of these buffets are not going to make gastronomical history. But, after having worked all day then commuted most of us do not want to spend aother 2 hours getting supper on the table. We’re looking for a place with reasonable prices for feeding our families with food that tastes somewhat better than the freeze dried concoctions in the military MREs.
The place where we go at least once a month has a great salad bar and the rest of the food is edible. When we really want to have great food this however is not the first place that comes to mind.
