Patrick Demarchelier - Madonna

photo_madonna_ray_of_life

Madonna always knew how to reinvent herself. Her looks for the videos ‘Frozen’ and ‘Nothing Really Matters‘ were very stunning. This is a promo shot for Harper’s Bazaar 1999.

Since there are so many stupid and meaningless blog awards out there I simply create my own!

I hereby give myself the high honors of winning the first place as the best orangeblog of all orangeblogs. I like to thank my mother, my mouse and my operating system.

The Offending Myth

myth_offending

If someone is offended by a joke then this race, religion, company, lifestyle or person has a serious flaw. Any imbalance from within creates insecurity that won’t respond kindly to jokes and sarcasm.

Tireless Efforts

historica_tireless_effort

I never understood why the industrial revolution discovered woman so late? Machines allowed them to work as hard and as productive as men. It took a big world war for managers and society to grasp that truth. Since then woman can be equally exploited and abused in factories as their male counterparts. Too bad payment still isn’t the same. Maybe we need another world war to settle this difference?

Do you know what your tattoo says?

blogosphere_tattoo_sikushi

Tribal symbols and kanji characters seem all the rage with some people. So they get tattooed with letters and symbols which they can’t decipher. This great blog by Tian actually analyses photos of tattoos and tries to explain what they mean (hanzismatter.com)

Many times the tattoo artists got the Chinese characters wrong or simply wrote stupid stuff on people’s backs, arms and legs. I love it! Some people are really doing anything stupid just to be cool. This is a truly original blog!

Robert Doisneau - L’accordioniste

photo_Robert Doisneau - Laccordioniste

Music is an essential part of our human culture. Too bad we are loosing that aspect in our daily lives. Instead of sharing and listening to it together everybody escapes into his / her own iPod-Sphere. And how many people can play an instrument these days or know the lyrics of several songs (not just the refrain)?

The British mind and the fear of a totalitarian Society

historica_british_visions_of_dark_futures

I find it highly strange and fascinating that some of the darkest visions about the future come from Britain: 1984, V for Vendetta and Brave New World. We consider British society as one of the most liberal and ‘free’ societies on earth - still nightmares of total state control and suppression seem to haunt the British mind. It is also true that Britain has more camera watching it’s citizen then any other country on this planet.

I suspect it’s all connected with the good old class system, the terrible human conditions of the industrial revolution and elitist games. As much we may think of Britain as in Jane Austin terms, witty games of the upper class, there was always a dark and big underbelly in British society. Achievements like the Magna Carta and many modern democratic rights were only granted to the upper class (very much like in the rest of Europe).

historica_class_system

We can’t lower our standards.

But since British society was also the first to experience the industrial revolution - it was also the first to encounter the horrors of this new era in human history. Terrible slums with unbelievable conditions, smog everywhere and extreme poverty. Certainly this has happened in big cities before - like in good old Rome. But never to such an extend.

And it was set in contrast to the Age of Enlightenment - new ideas about human rights and social equality. No surprise that Karl Marx (who lived for some time in London) and many other socialist thinkers were deeply influenced by the conditions of the new working class in Britain.

The British Empire of course had an ugly history of colonialism and brutal suppression. Almost any uprising was bitterly crushed. Only a few countries like America escaped the Empire by use of revolutionary force.

George Orwell started his writing career as an investigative reporter. He lived among the poorest of the poor and exposed the social dark side of this new industrial world in his great book Down and Out in Paris and London. But also his book ‘The Road to Wigan Pier‘ digs deeper into the dirt. Both books shocked Britain.

Victorian society slowly woke up to these truths and started to change. But only after social unrest and several waves of infectious diseases threatened their lifestyle too. But also revolutions first in France and later Russia ‘helped’ the upper class to see the need for change.

historica_class_system_saloon

Oh look Charles, this is really shocking! Those poor people …

Without such minds like Karl Marx and George Orwell Britain might have never developed to such free society (yes, socialism was a big influence in the UK - although Maggie Thatcher cleared most of it out). So every country needs smart system critics as well as pressure from the street and money willing to make changes. Social development doesn’t come for free and doesn’t ‘just’ happen.

The evil image of an totalitarian society as the twin of a great society might be a good way to keep people and politicians on their toes.

Professional Christians

wa_jerry_falwell

Dead, but still alive as an anti-gay martyr.

The American subculture of professional Christians is really amazing. They preach the word of god with the aid of technology and megachurches. They ‘collect’ huge amounts of money, but they hardly lift people out of poverty. They rage against some other subcultures, but rarely embrace forgiveness and tolerance.

Would they kiss a gay person or someone with aids like Jesus kissed a Leper or a Whore?

More? For kicks - watch the farting preacher and Ted Haggart admitting he fucked da gay on drugs - and watch him again raving against da gays.

But wouldn’t be bothered by windows updates, taxes and consumerism. A bug’s life might be quite nice actually …

When Parents go to War

Troops Return

Soldiers dying is hardly new.

But our modern armies have created a strange paradox: soldier ‘rotating’ in and out of the battlefield and back home within a few days. Modern soldiers can have a ‘normal’ family life almost parallel to their family life. Many western soldiers currently engaged in war in Iraq or Afghanistan videochat with their families via the internet with their loved ones at home. Horror during the day on duty - family at night via webcam. This has to be a total emotional paradox and maybe extra stress for the soldiers (or maybe consolidation).

modern_when_parents_go_to_war_2

But it must be even stranger for the kids: seeing one of their parents only onscreen - but the other parent at home must be going mad with fear. It must be terrible to deal with the chances - knowing that Daddy or Mommy might be killed within a few hours. You might even watch a piece of realtime news about the death of this person.

But there is another question - the question of love and dedication: do you love your country more than your own kids? Are you willing to die for a flag more than being at home and watching your kids grow up?

It is either a sign of great idealism or madness to fight for something bigger than your family.

PS: I am neither brave enough to have kids or fight a war for anyone or anything.

Opera Houses

design_semperoper

Click image for a larger version.

Old European Opera houses are the pinnacle of old nationalist countries. Exquisite design for the upper class and later the emerging rich bourgeoisie. But also the different levels, boxes and seating’s reflect the societies at that time: the king / ruler gets the center of attention and most space - while the prols have to stand somewhere in the back. Design as a reflection of society …

Senile Agitation or just bloody angry?

modern_senile_agitation

Since the populations turns grey in many industrial nations (and China) we will have an overwhelming load of geriatrics in our societies. Old people tend to vote and act more conservative. Are we looking at a new age of conservatism as well?

Or maybe this grey generation will be different, since they grew up as hippies and new individuals?

How will they influence society, since this older generation also is more political active then their offsprings? Are we facing more widsom or anger in politics and society for the passive failure that we call youth today?

Breed for cuteness

weird_fluffy_humaneyed_monster

The thing about genetics that scares me most is that we could create creatures only serve our weird social and emotional needs. It’s already bad enough that we slaughter, abuse and eat most of them anyway. Cats and dogs should be enough for emotionally deprived humans.

I love I love New York

tv_I_love_newyork

I am constantly amazed what kind of ‘reality’ soaps get made for the telebrain. VH1 is one of the biggest producer of amazing crap. Social porn in form of dating and humping shows are their genre. And they fiercely milk every dollar out of every micro celebrity they have created themselves. Excellent business concept!

The lovely lady above is such an example: she used to be a candidate for a dating show (big rap star looking for the perfect bitch), then she got her own mating series (I love New York - watch all episodes online if you dare)- and now ‘we’ are facing round two of this personality disaster.

Most amazing is that hundreds if not thousand of guys tried in auditions all over the US and via the intranets to get on the show as the perfect lover. I guess reality shows really create our reality more and more.
