Put that record on!

digital_record-player

Will kids in twenty years know what a record (player) was? On the other side: can any of you handle a gramophone or a roman wax notepad?

Furthermore I don’t mind missing audio CDs as well. Stupid media - it can break, rot and scratch over time as well. Just give me pure digital memory.

My youngest nephew was surprised when i told him that the TV we had when I was his age was black & white…

Diego

A friend of mine has a little sister who asked her grandfather what the world was like when it was in black and white…my sister just bought a retro radio/turntable which also can play cassette tapes and CDs. The turntable can play 78, 45 and 33 speed records and I have discovered why so many of my retro fanatic friends like “vinyl”. The recorded sound is so different as to be almost a different species!

Throughout the 60s, 70s, and early 80s I pursued audio perfection and spent a small fortune only to fall short. Now I have some 800 albums I have not heard since 1985. I keep promising myself I will get yet one more turntable and convert my collection to digital. Someday!

@Leonardo: Harhar. That was a good one. It’s strange to explain to kids today some of the obscure limits of old tech.

@Diego: A new face! Hello and thanks for your comment. Yeah, records really do sound different. Sometimes I miss my old record collection. Somehow music was “dirtier” with all the cracks and hisses, but warmer …

@RichM: Yeah right … I also wasted tons of money for various sound machines. But let’s be honest ripping records, cutting the tracks, naming ever files, downloading the covers from the intranets … a waste of time. It’s quicker to pirate the files instead of ripping them … you already own a licence to play them anyway …
