John Everett Millais - Blind Girl 1856

I think this is the most touching painting I know. Blindness surrounded by the beauty of nature and color (in form of a rainbow in the background). But it’s also about the unfairness of life itself. She is blind, her little sister / daughter isn’t.

More? Some articles discussing the painting: Victorian Web, Wikipedia and Millais entry @Artrenewal.org

Yes, I agree that it is very touching. I remember viewing this painting for long stretches of time in the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston, Texas back in the early 1990s. It it stunning in person. Millais’ pallette in this particular painting is nothing short of inspirational. I love the subject matter and its treatment so much that I chose it for a college project in which we were to emulate a painting of our choice.

@MANelson: Hello and welcome to my blog. Thanks for your many comments!

Your interpretation of the Blind Girl looks good. I always found it hard to emulate old masters - but once you tried to copy them you appreciate their skills even more …
