The solution to traffic jams? Built bigger streets!
But bigger street need more space. More space means that parts of the cities are cut apart and distancing them even further from each other. Plus nobody like living near a big highway and loads of pollution. So people move more to the countryside - pushing city boundaries even further apart and creating the need to for bigger streets to the outskirts.
Instead of making bigger cities - we need smaller ones, like old European ones with narrow streets and integrated neighborhoods (living, working, shopping and amusement in one area). Smaller distance means shorter travel time, you can maybe walk or cycle there.

Excellent thinking. One aspect of life here in Europe I love, I can get by very easily without a car. The town has existed since hundreds of years, and everything is accessible and walking distance. If I want to go to a large city, no problem, I take the train and once there, use the tram or walk. Of course that requires planning and yes during the recent strikes over here everything was a mess, but it’s a temporary mess. Building larger roads continuously ensures a permanent mess.
@anotsoperfectstranger: Yep. I think that’s the charm european cities: you get all you need in a ‘walkable’ area.
