High tech cable trash

digital_cable_mess

Yesterday I spent almost the whole day to sort out my computer box. I used to work as a system administrator for some time, so there are plenty of digital ‘leftovers’: adapters, cables, chargers, batteries, converters, transformers, even more cables and hubs of all sorts.

It is precious high tech trash. Some of these cables and especially adapters once cost a huge amount of money. I found one old Mac PowerBook to SCSI cable that once cost over €100. Now it’s simply high tech trash.

But it’s mostly poisonous trash. Some countries have laws against disposing it all as usual. Most cables and plugs contain precious metals - so it should be recycled.

But most of all: these cables and plugs should be designed to be more universal.

The USB plug and cable system for example was meant to be universal - just as the name says. But already USB is no longer just one plug but four different sizes. Well done computer industry!

And why can we have ONE charger for all those small gadgets like cell phones, cameras and mp3 players?

Just for the record, I heard that Cellphone giants Nokia, Sony-Ericsson, Motorola (not named in any particular order) agreed on a standard connector for both charging and data connectivity for their cell phones (which happens to be the microUSB standard, if memory serves me right) to be put in use around 2009.

On the other side, I’m finishing assembling my “brand new” computer (Same old case, brand new Motherboard, memory, processor & disc), and I just realized how much “tech garbage” I keep, and also the endless cable cuttlery that accompanies every modern PC no matter what you do!

USB (several of them), HDMI, Video, power, ethernet, etc, etc, etc… Aaaaaaaaaaaagh!!! Somebody rescue me from this nightmare!!! :)

This evening I bought some more memory for my computer running Vista Home Premium, seems 1 gig is just not enough. Then I thought about all the various programs and periferals I bought for the computers I have and the computers themselves and I have come to realize….I work to have computers…..

@Leonardo: 2009 … oh well … there is some hope left.

I think the old desktop systems use way too much cables anyway (I mean mostly internally). That’s I love Notebooks. I used to built my own machines - but notebooks just do the trick for me these days …

I could do with some more wireless stuff - IF IF IF it would work.

My Bluetooth mouse kills my Bluetooth headset. My wireless keyboard eat that much battery power I replaced it with a cabled one. A good wireless headset is nowhere to be found or very expensive … etc.

I still need tons of cables to power my external drive, external monitor, external CD burner and printer …

@RichMc: Vista, ey? Brave man. Yeah, in some way I have also a symbiotic lifestyle with my computers. I work with them to replace them with a nicer model and buy me some food …

Weird!
