Even after millions of wrecked knees, broken ankles and harsh downfalls the female of our species refuses to wear normal and safe footwear.
Instead they spent huge amounts of their income for these contraptions - just to be a little bit sexier, just to be a little bit higher and just to feel a bit better about themselves.
Just as guys try to improve their penis by buying huge cars and guns, female try to expand their alluring sexual qualities by huge amounts of leather objects in their closets.
And we’re arrogant enough to think footbinding is barbaric. I have one pair of heels, have had them for years, they still look brand-new because I only wear them if I know I’ll be sitting down all night 
If you’re not already sexy, I have no idea how a pair of uncomfortable shoes are going to make you alluring. People, eh? 
I used to love wearing high heels and almost cried when I had to give them all away after having my right ankle fused. Funny thing though, I never injured myself while wearing the heels. The fall down stairs, which caused a great deal of injury, occurred while I was wearing sneakers! :-/
@aperfectstranger: Maybe you are one of the few females that doesn’t need to over compensate for something?

I am as careful as I can be, but somethings are just out of our control.
Nevertheless, each experience comes with it’s “gifts”. One can grow in awareness, compassion, or gratefulness with even the most difficult challenges.
I am grateful for modern medicine … and especially grateful we are lucky enough to be able to get it when needed.
Still, I would love to put on high heels one more time and dance the night away.
