American Mass Media - the Masters of reporting Crap

tv_CNN_poll_our_reporting

CNN recently asked it’s viewers if they were sick and tired of all that shallow reporting? 94% of the viewers said yes. Even the question was so bloody obvious that one has to ask if not only the politicians, but also most of the mass media in that big country has lost contact with reality?

I recent weeks I watched the live reporting of the presidential primaries - and I was quite amused by the stupidity of it. The insights and talking points that the pundits and so called ‘experts’ used were chillingly flat - even I as an Non-American could see that.

This is not a dumbing down of a country - it is already dumb and shallow in the places were intellectuals should offer their brainpower to the people.

Apart from a few shining examples like Keith Olbermann I hardly see any TV journalist worth their money. Political agitation has become such a money game, that the messages they spread are so full of artificial flavor that they no longer need to have any nutritional value. American news has became like American Fast Food - it just bloats your mind, fattens your fears - but leaves you hungry and sick in the end.

You know Keith wouldn’t be necessary , if the “news ” media were doing their JOB . However since sensationalism , advancing U.S. foreign policy and protecting the status quo is the rule, we need all the voices , we can get .

@Kahoneez: Hello, welcome and thanks for you comment.

I agree with your statement. After 9/11 any form of thinking and criticism evaporated in the American media … a sad affair.

Olbermann appears unique when compared to most of the others but he’s just as much a part of the media Establishment as is Bill O’Reilly or Bob Schieffer, Tim Russert et al and the other corporate employee, network news readers.

Olbermann does get things right when he’s criticising bush and bush’s administration but he’s pure washington/nyc media club self-absorbed chickenshit. Sibel Edmonds? No mention. Election irregularities and quite possibly fraud in Iowa and New Hampshire? Silence from Keith. Continual bullying of the Palestinians by Israel and Israeli agitation for an American attack on Iran? Ho hum. Kucinich is excluded from the debate in Nevada. Our boy could hardly keep from grinning. He likes to pin the phrase “conspiracy theorist” on anyone who brings up a subject that hasn’t been approved by the nyc/dc media club.

He’s a big Hillary supporter, which is fine by me as long as he keeps it to himself, but watch for the tortuous scenarios and excuses he comes up with to defend Hillary every time she steps in something yukky or makes a statement that gets her in trouble. Hillary is a big Iran warhawk too, maybe that’s why Keith doesn’t say much on that subject. He did recognize this latest Straits of Hormuz “incident” for the complete theater production that it was, so he does get credit for that.

Olbermann is probably the best we’ve got on Establishment television but that’s no compliment at all. He’s hardly a crusader. Two-thirds of Americans have been saying for years the same things he’s saying now, so that doesn’t rate any special merit. He makes a ton of money agreeing with majority popular sentiment. Big deal. That doesn’t take any courage at all. Anything not approved in the nyc/dc news business club is “conspiracy” though as far as Keith is concerned. Pffft….

@Jonny Verdorben: Thanks for your long and detailed comment. Olbermann certainly isn’t perfect … and he is part of a business operation like Bill’O.

I think one of the real problems is that TV stations don’t need to report ‘fair and balanced’ anymore. Reagan got rid of the fairness rule back in the days.

Videos of some the more well done Olbermann commentaries are well known to YouTube viewers.

Finally, I thought, there was a newscaster on a for profit television channel who was different.

Unfortunately Keith Olbermann doesn’t sound so good on a regular basis and I find myself somewhat disappointed.

The problem with the US is, that the people have forgotten that we own the airwaves. Or maybe worse, what good news reporting actually sounds like at all.

Nevertheless, I feel hopeful that things can change for the better. Only time will tell.

@Judi: The Olbermann comment are gems, well written and always hit the nail. I wouldn’t mind more such GOOD commentators from all side of the political spectrum (and not just crap like Ann Coultergeist).

The emphasize should be intelligent discussion and brainy comments. Mudslinging is easy and just pulls the political debate down to a unhelpful level of street fighting.
