Happy 90th Birthday to the Royal Air Force

war_RAF_roundel.svg

On the 1st April 1918 the RAF was founded to defend King and Country - and what a great job they did so far.

The RAF most iconic machine - the Supermarine Spitfire.

war_raf_Air_Chief_Marshal_Sir_Arthur_Harris

It’s most controversial Commander Sir Arthur “Bomber” Harris - who ordered the fire bombing of Dresden and Hamburg.

war_raf_eurofighter

Today’s coolest jet - the Eurofighter Typhoon (yeah I know this one has German insignia - couldn’t find a good image with RAF ones).

A cool jet indeed, but IMO not the coolest. For that honor I would have to submit the F35 Joint Strike Fighter. Ultra maneuverable, vertical takeoff and landing capability (with hover!), and of course the latest in anti-detection technology.

@Stephen: The F-35 is awesome - but I still go with the Typhoon. Although I like the Mig-29 a lot as well.

You’re right about the Mig, a VERY capable aircraft. The Typhoon is an awesome plane, I’m just biased to U.S. stuff, as you already know!

Hey OG - I think you mean SUPERmarine Spitfire! The SUBmarine Spitfire was an abject failure as the wings kept getting caught in seaweed. :)

@Andy: Of course! Thanks for the correction … what was I thinking … although Submarine Spitfire is pretty funny … ;-)
