@ananthan: Thanks! All the other sites like the BBC made these historical references - I thought it would be lame to repeat them. I went for the personal perspective instead.

Sorry for the delay in responding. I am not getting your notification of further discussions on your posts.

To answer your question:

"You have lived right through the space age - and you got sons. Did they play with spaceships when they were young? Did they want to become astronauts? Just curious …"

Yes. Not only did my sons play with spaceships my eldest (who is the same age as you) dreamed of being an astronaut. They grew up with parents who were Star Trek fans. In fact I still am.

When Mike was in elementary school, he was into Model Rocketry and I would chauffeur him to classes held at the California Museum of Science and Industry. The skills he learned there later got him into a bit of trouble, but that is another story....

From an early age, I too dreamed of traveling to the stars, even though I was a girl. Science Fiction was my favorite reading matter.

I still remember the day Neil Armstrong took the first step on the moon. We were at a wedding reception at somebody's home. A bunch of us found a room with a television and watched breathlessly while history was being made.

To this day, every time I am on a plane and I feel the feeling one gets at the time of lift off, I have to hold myself back from singing out loud; "Into the air, Junior Bird Men, Into the air upside down..."

@Judi: Dankeschön.

You have lived right through the space age - and you got sons.

Did they play with spaceships when they were young? Did they want to become astronauts?

Just curious ...
