Classical Music it’s all about interpretation: Prelude from Bach’s Cello Suite No. 1

Yo-Yo Ma

Mstislav Rostropovich

Paul Tortelier (Masterclass)

Mischa Maisky

When people try to “get into” classical music they have to cope with so many different interpretations of the same piece.

Sometimes it takes some training to become a good listener and know your favorite piece of Bach or Mozart so well that you can “judge” different interpretations.

But don’t make the mistake looking for the perfect interpretation, look for the one that touches your soul. That’s the right one for you …

Here are four different interpretations of one of my favorite Bach pieces. Which one do you like best?

The Tortelier is so joyful and for me an extension of his voice and the playfulness of his charcter. The Rostropovich is not of this world and transcends the intention of the composer. Yo-Yo Ma gives a laser like focus that never loses it’s tautness. I was unfamiliar with the Maisky but impressed by the acoustical exchange between his instrument and the bright resonance of the room. All in all I think they each speak to a different audience and for my heart I go with Tortelier, my head with Yo-Yo Ma, my soul with Rostropovich, and for Maisky I’d grab a sweetened coffee and a few biscuits and plop down on the floor and enjoy the day.
