Barack Obama is the new American President – finally it’s over!

Thank you America – you have restored some of my faith in your nation.

Now let’s hope President Obama can get you out of that huge mess that Bush guy has caused you.

We have a lot of hard work to do to dig ourselves out of this mess, but is a new day for America, and I for one am very hopeful we can begin to make things better.

@zoee: Well, the new President has lots of work ahead of him.

I am not sure if the US has really changed that much. Without the economic issues of the last few weeks McCain might have had a bigger chance of winning …

@Judi: I don’t envy Obama and his team. They will spent at least the next four years cleaning up the mess King George left behind …

With the election over it seems almost like you can breath again.

In 2000, as most of you know, Bush did not get the majority of the votes but won the election by a quirk of how we elect presidents through the electoral college. That particular institution goes back to the days when we still had slaves in American and they counted for 3/5 of a man for voting purposes. Even though slavery is gone the Electoral College lingers on.

In 2000 the voting was still close and while Bush thought he had a landslide and a mandate his margin really was not that great.

Now in 2008, Obama wins by a larger margin and with considerably more votes. While it is possible that had the economic situation not been so dire McCain may have won. I think despite the economic crisis, Obama would have won because of the many other situations that confront the U.S. People are tired of the perpetual war and people I think have also begun to realize that they have made little progress in the last 8 years on too many fronts to include the perennial question of “Are you better off now than you were 4 years ago?”
Americans decided it was time for a change. We’re just slow learners. Bear with us, we mean well.
