The Doctor-keeps-you-healthy-Myth

myth_doctors

Doctors don’t know everything about health – and often lead very stressful and unhealthy lives. Hardly good role models to follow.

Plus it’s your body that heals itself – most medicine just supports your own health system. So be responsible and keep yourself in good shape, don’t expect someone else to offer a quick fix for years of abuse of your own "temple".

And you should never trust just one doctors opinion when it comes to important decisions like operations. Visit at least another expert – if you can afford it …

I’m right there with you. But I’d go a step further. It’s no use getting “check-ups” if you’re not gonna follow the doctor’s advice. It just drives up the cost of health care for everybody.

@Jason: Agreed, many people just don’t REALLY care about their own health. I often think (here in our socialized health care systems ;-) some exams should be mandatory and if you continue to abuse yourself you should pay higher premiums – to finance later medical costs …

That seems to be the philosophy behind higher cigarette taxes and using that money on health care costs. Problem is, people stop smoking because of the higher taxes and then all that money for health care starts to dry up.

@Jadon: Still prefer “socialized healthcare” over the American model. It is financed in some strange way, but only to pay for medical services.

I don’t think socialized medicine is all that great. I’d prefer a libertarian model. http://ping.fm/ukqeh

@Jason: Read your entry.

I think a Nations health is an important and common good. Everybody should be entitled to health care. Every modern nation has free health care – except the USA.

Check out my posting about Big Government vs Free Markets – and see the important historical achievement of the workers to get free health care.
