Pablo Picasso - Woman with a Flower

art_Picasso - Woman with a Flower

The great thing about abstract art is - that you can tell the audience almost anything and they believe it. ;-)

Still a great art by maestro Picasso.

Franz von Stuck - The Kiss of the Sphinx

art_franz_von_stuck-The_Kiss_of_the_Sphinx

I am actually very surprised that I hardly posted any paintings from this great Artist. First of all his style is dark, brutal and sensual - just adore it. You’ll hardly find another painter with such simple compositions, but such honest and direct execution of his stories.

Second - he is part of the Munich Secessions - so that’s home - so expect some more Stuck in this blog.

Classical themes are still alive and kicking - we just often don’t recognize their heritage in a new composition. Their are deeply rooted in our collective art memories.

John Singer Sargent - Madame X

John Singer Sargent has created many trivial paintings like family portraits - but he also created a few magical ones. Whoever Madame X was - Sargent has captured her beauty and fascination well. A dream on canvas.

Pablo Picasso - Woman with a Fan

art_Picasso - Woman_with_a_Fan

I like the geometric play between the pleasing female shape and already blocky & cubistic tendencies of Mr Picasso. But I have to complain that the positioning of the fan(ny) is way too vulgar even for a Picasso. On the other side you can’t be a genius everyday - and he was a ‘just’ another guy someday …

Lord Frederick Leighton - The Bath of Psyche

Apart from the nice Lady - all our psyches need to cleaned and relaxed in a steamy bath from time to time. Your psyche - like your body - needs care and proper maintenance. And make sure not to feed your many any crap that comes around - like your stomach it won’t digest bad mental food properly.

I think everybody know that piece - it has been used and abused on TV all the time. I love ‘Peer Gynt‘ - it’s a great story and great music.

I love the mood of this painting as well as it’s colours. Landscapes are usually boring, but this blue coastal impression is very enjoyable and romantic.

Frederik Chopin - Etude c-moll Op. 25 No. 12

music_chopin_etudes

Chopin’s Etudes were a new system of technical piano play (whatever that means - I suck at anything music). BUT … these 27 pieces of music are quite original. So here is one of them.

Frederik Chopin - Etude c-moll Op. 25 No. 12 played by Leonald Kaidja a great  Estonian pianist. Please visit his website for loads of great music.

Mad people have a certain erotic schizophrenia normal people are attracted to. It’s that unwavering certainty that scares and thrills mere mortals. Brilliantly captured by the great Maestro on this painting.

Zauberflöte - Papagena / Papageno Overkill!

Well, I am a big fan of Mozart’s “Die Zauberflöte” and I just wanted to post ONE video of the scene when Papageno finally meets his Papagena. One of the most charming and heartwarming scenes ever in Opera. But while searching one thing lead to another on YouTube.

So here I give you the good, the bad and the ugly. As anyone into classical music will tell you it’s all about performance and interpretation. And boy, some of these interpretation make you laugh with joy and some make you cry.

So if you have some time then dive into some Mozartology … all videos afther the fold …

New York, Manfred Hemm and Barbara Kilduff. One of my all time favs: old school stage design, charming singers and a lot of joy. Maybe the best performance in this set.

Canti Gregoriani - Kyrie Christe Eleison

music_Kyrie

European classical music is great - when you ignore about a thousand years of religious singsang. Literally for centuries composers were obliged to repeat the same topics over and over again: kyrie eleison (Greek for ‘Lord have mercy’) etc.

Musical freedom and the development of more complex music came AFTER the catholic church had lost it’s stranglehold on ‘popular culture of the middle ages’. Actually the protestant revolution actually helped a lot to trigger that change.

Today when we hear real and fake Gregorian Monks chant it - it sooths our hectic souls. The new age movement has totally swallowed that old Christian groove. There are even pop versions of it - the group ‘Enigma’ has made a very healthy living from it.

But overall have you heard one Kyrie Eleison you heard them all.

Franz Schubert - Der Erlkönig

Hardcore teutonic culture: poem by Goethe and music by Franz Schubert - sung by some dramatic wagnerian female voice. You’ll find the poem after the break.

If you actually have problems understanding the lyrics - you are not alone. German often is terrible when sung, especially in dramatic Operas when they distort every word (I am looking at you Richard Wagner!). Still a nice piece of Leitkultur.
