One of my childhood heroes. Just loved his funny movies. I am not sure if many people outside France really know him - but here in Germany his movies were very popular. Especially loved his Gendarme / Inspector of St. Tropez and Fantomas series.

So very different from Peter Sellers version of a french policemen.

Some videos to watch: Herr Müller, Fantomas trailer and a typical case of Louis madness.

This is a very unique movie - there is hardly anything out there that comes close to it. It has some elements of a comedy to it, but most of all I would consider it a brilliant essay on modern life. Every time I watched this masterpiece I felt strange, but also amused and well educated. This is certainly not a movie if you want to be entertained by gunfire or hot chicks - it’s more like looking into a magic mirror and discover your own world from a new perspective. It also has it’s own speed and melody.

Here are some scenes on YouTube: overall videos, Trailer and Tati arrives at Corporation.

More? Roger Ebert Review, excellent review of the DVD at the DVD-Beaver and the Wikipedia entry on Jacques Tati

Is France going nuts?!

FRANCE SARKOZY

BBC News: France warning of war with Iran

I was just happy that we got rid of Tony, the atomic Chirac and Silvio. Now Sarko comes along and does saber rattling a  la President Shrub. Maybe there is a case of Mad Cow in Paris?

Hello France?! Did you elect a little Napoleon that has to overcompensate something?! The Iranians are certainly nut cases, but threatening war is certainly not the way to win the hearts and minds of the Iranian people …

Euro-Tussle: Sarko vs Merkel

Spiegel Online: Le President Nicolas Sarkozy and Frau Bundeskanzler Merkel don’t seem to get along very well. Maybe too much wine Sarko?

So nothing really new in the Franco-Teutonic relationship since 1945. A little bit of rumble there, a little bit of love here. Nothing exciting and terrible. No wars, nobody gets killed. That’s what I like about EU politics …

Overall the Franco-Teutonic axis of Europe will continue to drive on integration and progress. No matter how much fighting there is - and no matter how much the Brits love to play the smart outsiders or the Poles the new Bigwigs.

Henri Cartier-Bresson - Aquila degli Abruzi (1952)

This photo is just 50 years old - and it already feels like from a different century (well it actually is). The world has never changed as fast and global as in the last 150 years. I am curious what our kids will say about our times?
