The old new Problem of Teenage Mothers

modern_teenage_mothers

Teenage Mothers are not a new phenomenon. Since the Industrial Revolution the family has become smaller and smaller.

Patchwork Families and Single Parents are now almost the norm. Today unruly teenager produces more babies than ever. Especially fuelled by free sex (basically a good thing), recreational drugs (mostly weed) and binge drinking (basically a very bad thing – especially for youngsters).

This just fuels the growth of a new underclass: kids who grow up without a father (usually), underprivileged because mom never got a good education or never had the time to get a career.

Why do we love to watch Social Porn on TV?

modern_social_porn_jeremy_kyle_show_1

modern_social_porn_jeremy_kyle_show_3

modern_social_porn_jeremy_kyle_show_5

modern_social_porn_jeremy_kyle_show_4

Oh, the pain! Oh, the drama! We are uncovering all the lies in your relationship …

Definition Social Porn: Watching other peoples’ relationships without really having a relationship with them – and mentally participating in their dramas.

Since the early 80’s there has been a Tsunami of afternoon talk shows filled with social drama and pain.

And we are loving it!

It is amazing how the Queens and Kings of "honesty" and "self righteousness" are police, judge and executioner in one person. Oprah made Billions of Dollars with her tears, Jeremy Kyle currently tries to do the same in the UK.

But the real question is: Why do we frenetically watch and love Social Porn?

modern_oprah-crying

Every tear is worth a million dollars …

It all comes down to us being social animals. When you look at many fellow mammals they have social hierarchies like us with different ranks. Everybody knows what an alpha-male or alpha-female is.

But one essential feature of social networking (the real thing, not the simulation on Facebook) is watching other "animals" in the tribe. Watching the "others" allows us to spot opportunities to climb the social ladder, make new friends, know who our enemies are and our enemies’ enemies are.

The most important part of watching others is to learn where you stand in the tribe’s hierarchy and your chances to climb higher or fail …

modern_sniffing-dog-butt

Yeah, you might be bigger, but my social ranking is higher …

For some animals this is much easier: dogs sniff other dogs arse or even sample their urine or poo – and can analyse from this the status and current health of the fellow canine.

We primates have developed the face as the main social interFACE. Compared to most other animals the primates’ face has the more muscles and expressions than anyone else on this planet. Ape and human faces have an incredible range of "gestures" – which work even across species.

Our faces tell complete stories without words. We can socialize simply by looking at each other. You usually can see in an instant if someone looking at you likes you or hates you; if there is a chance for a better social contact or if that other person might even attack you …

So by watching and gossiping with others about others we learn what’s going on in the group, what the other members strengths and weaknesses are, and which tactics are successful or devastating.

modern_social_pron_baboons

I’ll scratch your back, if you …

Being successful in climbing the social ladder increases our chances of mating and spreading our genes. Yes, Ladies & Gentleman, it all comes down to mating once again …

And watching social porn on TV confirms this: it’s mostly about sex and cheating.

When we watch these dramas, we learn how to "protect" our own social involvement and genetic "investment". Of course we want partners, who are safe for our offspring and support them. We don’t want cheats that are a danger to our sperm or egg investment – and therefore perpetuation of our "selfish gene".

Social Porn on TV is a highly valuable lesson to "spot" cheaters and avoid failures in reproduction.

modern_social_porn_black_baby_white_parents

Wait a minute! Is that critter really mine?!

So watching social porn on TV and gossiping about relationships has an important biological benefit. We learn how to be successful animals and mating mates …

But there is also a strong social and moral component to it. We humans have transformed many "biological mechanisms" into social rules like married people do not engage in sex with strangers. Based on these social rules we have created moral and religious restrictions as well.

"You shall not covet your neighbour’s wife (or husband)." is simply a biological need (protecting your sperm & eggs from invaders) turned into a social and moral rule.

So Social Porn also enforces these "morals" when cheaters and liars get booed by the audience and judged by the presenter. That is why the Ladies in the audience hiss, when a boyfriend cheated on his bitch – it’s a violation of the biological contract of only breeding exclusively together.

This social pressure is once again there to protect our biological investments.

modern_social_porn_ashton_kutcher_demi

We love watching Alpha-Couples, especially when they are media whores and on twitter.

The biological background also explains why we love watching alpha-animals of the global tribe and their relationships. Like good herd animals we learn from watching the strongest and fittest of our flock.

That is why so many people know more about the life’s of celebrities and their relationships than their neighbours living in the same house. Our biological desire is to swim ahead in the genetic pool and score the most adorable eggs or sperm available. That is why some ladies fantasize about sleeping with Bruce Willies, while Guy virtually impregnate Megan Fox.

That’s Social Porn in it’s most basic form and desire. Women and men do it equally.

Remember when everything was too big?

modern_bath_tub

There was a time in all our lives, when everything was bigger and hardly anything was made for our size.

When we grow in size and understanding when is the moment when we recognize we "fit" in and are no longer too small?

When do we see ourselves as "big enough" and "grown enough" to fill the shoes as adults?

Since modern societies hardly celebrate any rites of adulthood anymore we don’t even have ceremonial moments to mark that point in our lives.

Soldiers are Parents too – but why?

war_soldiers_are_parents_too

One aspect that I find highly fascinating and morbid as well is that so many soldiers often have families and kids.

Why would you start a family in face of death and cause a lot of pain for your loved ones? It seems almost cynical and sadistic to form a family, leave them to fight and come back badly injured or dead.

With the high chance of getting killed is the desire to clone yourself especially high?

Or is it just the soldiers way to live life to the fullest and give and experience every aspect of being human?

Or is it part of a old fashioned mindset and lifestyle: having a family and fighting for it on all fronts possible?

Or is it an odd way to create a support system for yourself while in battle, give yourself a reason to fight or comeback?

Any ideas? Anyone?

The Advantage of the Single-Device-Family

modern_family-watching-tv

In the Stone Age of Multimedia there was just one TV, one Radio, one Phone and one Record Player for the whole family.

Today’s multi-channel multimedia families have multiple entertainment and data devices for each family member. Plus everyone has many different online-personalities all over the intranets.

Instead of living and experiencing a "unified family reality" today we spread ourselves over several planes of virtual existence.

So it’s no surprise that so many families are feeling disconnected, hardly share mutual experiences or participate in each other’s lives. They are connected somewhere else with a million strangers …

The Single-Device-Family was certainly less sophisticated, but they actually had more time on their hands. They didn’t need to learn to handle complex devices, configure their computers, VCRs, cell phones, cameras, digicams, Facebook & MySpace pages, update their operating systems …

Their head were less stuffed with following a gazillion TV shows, celebrities, events in remote places, horrors and hysterias unreported or not yet invented.

Less sometimes really is more.

The problem with simulations is that they keep you from learning the real deal. Sure not everybody can afford flying lessons or buy a Tank and blast their neighbours. Fair enough …

But so called "music and dance games" are dreadful – why not REALLY learn to play the guitar or take some dancing lessons. Sure it’s hard work, but much more rewarding than some virtual high scores.

The same applies to martial arts and combat games. Join the National Guard, the Police or a Shooting club if you like handling guns and combat. Or learn Judo, Aikido, Kung Fu or Karate in some local Dojo. Especially learning REAL martial arts can bring so much insight and fitness into your REAL life.

Playing games once in a while is nice, learning something for life is nicer …

The Root of all School Shootings?

gaming_doom_box

Doom is the Mother of all first person shooters – the root of all games that are blamed when kids go postal.

I still think that MOST games in larger doses are bad for young brains, because too much gaming has similar effects like being a drug addict. Plus games offer only a reduced set of "solutions" and "interactions" – so the human brain trains the same simple patterns again and again. Like all bad habits repetition is bad for you.

Our minds are built for problem solving and pattern recognition. When you play a game too much you brain keeps playing the game, even when you stop doing it physically.

There is no ultimate explanation for people going on the ultimate killing spree, but we should also watch the "smaller" effects of games on young people.

Wisdom of the Tribe – How do we want our Kids to learn about Life?

modern_wisdom_of_elders

modern_wisdom_of_elders_child-watching-tv

Does it still take a whole village to raise child?

In modern countries the old "system" of learning from your parents, your younger and older siblings, relatives, friends, the elders and the rest village are almost gone.

Most kids grow up with single parents without any siblings. The modern family network usually is very small and doesn’t offer a "full set" of relatives. Even the grandparents show less and less interest in their genetic offspring’s anymore.

Sure we have schools and universities to learn at. But they teach us not much about life – they mostly transfer only knowledge and facts. Sure, there is social interactions, but not the Wisdom of the Tribe.

But was is the Wisdom of the Tribe. Today we would call the "Tribe" your "social network" – but it should really include your extended family (genetically and spiritually). It’s wisdom is how to handle life, how to deal with problems, an understanding about each persons "essence" in the tribe, growing up, listening to old stories, adapting family histories and finally taking responsibility for your own life. The tribe also teaches you how to deal with death – diving into spirituality and creating your own mythology for your own mental survival.

modern_wisdom_of_elders_TV_family

A great way to learn about real life?

Most of these things are left to shrinks or anti-depressants. Television provides most of the myths in form of fairy tales and heroes we model our life’s after. In a sad way more kids have been impressed by James T. Kirk than by their own fathers or anyone in their families.

Many generations living together as a tribe give each other a chance to learn from each others current state of mind and problems of their current phase in life. It’s learning by watching and relating – young with old.

Today we hardly have such intimate insights into human life – it’s either from a distance or from TV.

Please tell me, where is that Childhood Innocence everybody is talking about?

modern_kinder_geburtstags

They all say be loose our innocence or something else when we grow up. There seems to be a slow transformation from a small happy camper to a miserable corporate slave.

But is it really true?

Childhoods are not as happy as they are often portrait by adults. The daily challenge of learning and being rather totally without about almost everything must be pretty frustrating. Kids are often frustrated and overwhelmed by “our” world. And being small, weak and being unable to create your own life it’s pretty unnerving too.

Plus your body and mind constantly changes, hormones drive you mad and illnesses are constantly looking out to infect or kill you. With every change and new thing they learn kids face a new thing they can worry about – and they do. There is no (mental) innocence in the life of kids, but there is a lot of stress and panic. Kids certainly can worry about as many things as adults do.

This is pure stress – so we should be rather happy that kids can have “innocent fun” and enjoy themselves by playing rather stupid games (while often still learning while playing).

psyche_kids_growing_up

What is this? Maybe just a thing? Or maybe a funny toy? Or something that can scare or even kill you?

Being a kid is a lot of stress, growing up a huge challenge without any real goal or explanation. Suddenly you are big and an adult. People demand from you that you choose your path and job for life without knowing what life is.

There is no such stages in our early life’s, when we are without stress and under constant demands from the outside to grow, learn and adapt. There is no time for innocence, nor do kids have any use for such a “concept”. They already have enough to worry about.

psyche_kids_growing_up_big_buffet

Life is not a box of chocolate, but a fucking long buffet – that you might enjoy or maybe not.

Only as an adult you can create your own life and your own niche to get control our your own cosmos.

But not many adults own their own life’s. Instead they develop a deep nostalgia about being innocent WITHOUT being able to control their own life’s. Many people are deeply scared by having freedom and the ability to make a choice.

Happy 50th Birthday NASA – and I am one of the many bastard Children of the Space Age

historica_50_years_early_astronaut

BBC News: NASA’s 50 years in Space (Videos)

The dogmatic search for a better future was the driving force of the 20th century.

Let’s go back to the Age of Enlightenment that was driven by new insights and lofty goals for humanity. It was the time of colonialism, conquests and the true start of globalization. Although under the brutal direction of European Colonials the world was for the first time completely explored, connected and aware of each other.

historica_50_years_nasa_quakers_and_indians

Excuse me, we are nice colonists and are looking for a place to build a spaceport.

But it was also the Age of Humanitarianism, when we realized that King & Country were not eternal and that humanity needed better tools and ideals to guide itself into the future. One outcome of this new Idealism was the French Revolution as well as the United States of America – a totally new way to govern modern societies.

Compared to the former religious societies our Forefathers suddenly had “mental space” for a different and better future. Under Religion and Royals there was no “improving” future as we know it today. There was only the continuation of yesterday until Judgement Day. Any change driven by human ideas was considered blasphemy and unnecessary – since everything was nicely arranged in God’s perfect plan.

historica_50_years_nasa_nietzsche

Move aside God – we need space for the future …

The Industrial Age of the 19th Century with it’s incredible social and scientific achievements where the ultimate proof that “God was dead” (Nietzsche) and that the nation state transcended Religion and Kings. The eternal plan was scraped, finally there was a Future and the mental space for real progress.

Already in the early Industrial Age authors like Jules Verne established many modern visions of a technological future: underwater cities, submarines, flying machines, rockets and interplanetary travel. All based on the work of daring scientists and engineers.

New political and social sciences radically changed western cultures: Psychology, Socialism, Mass Production, Consumerism and Individualism transformed the old Democracies into new powerful nation states.

historica_50_years_nasa_Darwin_Old

He didn’t built any rockets, but he was one of many important fathers of modern science.

All new political ideas like Socialism, Communism and a new modern (Market) Capitalism were based new insights and sciences available at the time. Even Fascism got many of it’s ideas from science, especially from Darwinism and most of all Social Darwinism – which lead to the dreadful science of Eugenics.

Small side note: Social Darwinism has actually not invented by him – it was rather based on Herbert Spencer, Thomas Malthus, and Francis Galton work. It was first just a very convenient way to justify Colonialism and the Class System.

historica_50_years_nasa_Eugenics

Sorry, your nose is too big to be an Aryan or an Astronaut.

Nevertheless – Science was established as the ultimate method to build a better life. Our future depended on better science and technology. Our Forefathers were delighted and enchanted by all the exciting new discoveries.

Already in the 1920’s and 1930’s a new kind of Futurism swept through America, Europe and some parts of Asia. Freud’s psychology fascinated people all over the western world and the although the great Depression was a terrible event for everybody modern Consumerism started to thrive in that time too.

historica_50_years_nasa_Ford-Model-T

Modern Consumerism always demanded High Tech.

But there was also a cultural Futurism (not to be confused with the Italian Futurism). Thanks to new forms of Mass Media (especially comics, radio and cinemas) science fiction presented a glorious technological future to the masses. Hero’s like Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers and many others showed the way to the Future – first as comics, then as radio serials and later as movies.

Interestingly enough: early science fiction (in literature and on the screen) adopted Democracy and Humanitarianism as the ultimate choice for any lifeform. Technology and science as tools to archive the best way of life. This message is ultimately portrayed in the movie “Things to Come” (1936).

historica_NASA-50_years_flash_gordon_ming

I am sure evil Ming’s military never faced NASA’s budget cuts!

The terrible conflicts of ideas first dismantled the old colonial powers in WWI and WWII. Both wars showed that science and technology was the ultimate weapon. The future belonged to flying machines, atomic power and electronics.

Many weapons invented in WWII are still stranger then (science) fiction like flying saucers. But the Cold War fathered even stranger and more futuristic machinery: like the atomic bomber, killer satellites or stealth fighters.

The space age already started with Wernher von Braun and his terrible V-2 rocket in 1942. But this was really only the beginning …

historica_50_years_sputnik

There is one small reason for NASA’s existence: Sputnik.

In the 1950’s rockets and spacemen were already deeply embedded into the public’s mind through science fiction and popular science. But on October 4, 1957 it all become real with the launch of Sputnik. Hardly a year later the Americans founded NASA on July 29, 1958. The space age finally took off with full power.

historica_50_years_chimp_astronaut

Once again the chimps got there before us!

From the 1950’s till the mid 1980’s popular culture and media was shaped by science, technology and science fiction. From Sputnik to the Space Shuttle and from Captain Kirk to Star Wars – it was the Age of happy technology and unlimited possibilities.

historica_50_years_nasa_star_wars

Star Wars 1977 not only my personal turning point in my childhood …

Every boys dream was to become an Astronaut. Being smart or even being a Scientist was considered cool. Building stuff that actually worked was even cooler. Toys like chemistry sets, rocket kits or ever complex LEGO machinery were best sellers.

historica_50_years_nasa_astronaut_kid

Totally out of fashion today: being an Astronaut. Not as cool as being a Rapper or Supermodel.

I was born 1967 – I was two years old when Apollo 11 landed on the moon. Too young to really watch it. But I do remember that I watched every bit of “space anything”, science fiction or scientific program on the telly.

science_nasa-logo

Until the mid 1980’s my generation grew up on a positive vision of the future, science and technology. Sure – already in the 1970’s the Hippies questioned our modern lifestyle – but it was not until the start and success of the green movement that this positive and uncritical vision was replaced with a more darker, distrusting and often strangely esoteric vision of the future.

historica_50_years_kid_in_space_suit

I am still in my heart a spaceman, but I guess that era is over.

Huge LAN-Parties are a new form of event – which evolved from small gaming sessions at a friends house. Usually a couple a friends gather, bring their computers, loads of cables and food and game for several hours or even days straight. A lot of soda and pizza is consumed – and electricity.

But these big ass public LAN-Parties are amazing and eerie. There you have HUGE halls or convention centers filled with thousands of young nerds and gamer – and you hardly hear a thing – apart from computers humming.

Why? Because almost everybody is wearing a headset / headphones and they are all fully concentrated on killing each other. You hear the occasional cry of victory or defeat – but that’s it – the rest is silence.

Normally when huge crowds of young males gather they are loud, obnoxious, often on the verge of misbehaving or serious violence (football games etc.). LAN-Parties are very silent, orderly and very odd.

The real action happens in many virtual battlefield and servers.

When I watch some young parents playing with their kids I often wonder: did they want a kid or simply a talking doll?

That phrase “they grow up so fast” especially sounds very stupid in that context. What did you expect what was going to happen: your baby would stay forever tiny, vulnerable and totally dependable on you – so you can play and dominate that little human?

Annoyed by cell phones all over the place? People talking all the time? Too bad. But we humans need to communicate for our social and individual survival. Communication is an essential part of our existence to reflect ourselves and connect to the group consciousness.

It really starts in the womb and ends with death. In between we are busy communicating, exchanging ideas, learning, archiving, expanding and revising knowledge.

Would you accept three free wishes from this man?

weird_fairy_grandfather

It’s about time that fairies join the equal rights movement. Most male fairy creatures are rather means and grumpy (Leprechaun, Rumpelstilzchen, etc.).

Why are all these good jobs mostly reserved for yummy and charming woman?

We old farts also want to appear in children’s bedrooms in a cloud of pink fairy dust – and wipe the tears of little faces.

But I am pretty sure someone will sue male fairies for sexual harassment as soon as the first wish was granted!

*Thanks Judefa for that lovely picture*
