National Tragedies ahead: Germany vs Austria

wa_em2008_germany_vs_austria

Yesterday’s wars are today’s football games. Nationalism and passion boils over when football teams battle for the national pride. Although I don’t like football very much I prefer this form of nationalism over wars and other bloody conflicts.

Today is a tragedy in the making: either Germany or Austria will be kicked out of the tournament. In both cases a national disaster.

Since neither nation likes each other very much a war of words already started last week when it was clear that the German team was in deep trouble after it’s shitty game against Croatia.

Now the mighty German Fußball Nation has to win against tiny Austria - which has been not bad so far in this tournament.

Personally: I don’t care! May the best team win - although I would love to see Austria win, which would result in the bigger tragedy. I think that would be much more entertaining …

So far I think Oranje is the best team - they have played the best games so far and played the most convincing football.

The slow Death of international Borders

historica_borders_are_vanishing

Borders are not a human invention, but natures. All kind of animals mark and defend their territory against their own and other species. Just ask your own pets.

But it’s time for the human race to transcend borders and the idea of the Nationstate altogether. The flow of people, ideas and goods should be free. That was one of the basic ideas behind the European Union - and still is.

Crossing borders has become much easier in the last 100 years, but there are still too many walls and fences up. And we still have some nations totally isolated from the global community. But the number of international trade and travel agreements are slowly growing and the openness is expanding.

Let’s hope that in 100 or 200 years most borders only exist on paper.

Well done Serbian Nationalists - the World laughs at you

wa_serbian_nationalists

The Serbs have not the best reputation in Europe. The bloody deeds during the wars after the fall of Yugoslavia will be forever remembered. After NATO bombed them into submission - way too late in my personal opinion - it seemed liked the Serbs are willing to break with the past and join all the other smaller Nation as part of the European Community.

But recent protests and the reemerging ugly face of Serbian nationalism makes this very doubtful. They rather join Russia instead of the EU. And I am not sure if the EU really wants them to join anyway. At the moment the EU is pretty pissed
