John Singer Sargent has created many trivial paintings like family portraits - but he also created a few magical ones. Whoever Madame X was - Sargent has captured her beauty and fascination well. A dream on canvas.

Usually I dislike simply linking to big image dumps in some forums, but this one is special. Great shots from rural Russia. (I guess? Anyone out there can help me there?)
Like van Gogh the photographer took some time at the grace and beauty of normal life, age and the landscape. It takes some love and an open mind to see that we are all beautiful, even in the most forgotten places on earth …

Madonna always knew how to reinvent herself. Her looks for the videos ‘Frozen’ and ‘Nothing Really Matters‘ were very stunning. This is a promo shot for Harper’s Bazaar 1999.

Norma’s beauty and esprit is so very different from today’s movie stars. I wonder if many of the silent and early stars would ever make it in our modern cult of celebrity? If Paris Hilton can call herself a ‘brand’ then Norma Shearer certainly was a Goddess.

Artist: George Hurrell - thanks Brad

Sorry, is it just me or is it hot in here? You actually can buy a copy of that shot for a mere $2500. Any lottery winners out there?

Usually I am not a big fan of such shots - but in this case I like that almost graphical style of the image processing. Very cool!
I’ll trade three Kate Moss and a sack of strange white powder for the original fashion stick. Shamelessly stolen from here - Tom Sutpen & Stephen Cooke
Photographer: unknown - can anyone help?

I am still trying to find out who did this great shot - all I have is a name, but the Google God won’t deliver any hints. Her face and the shots composition are simply timeless …
If there is one photographer that has shaped the 80’s visual landscape it’s Herb Ritts (together with Robert Mapplethorpe and . His strong black and white portraits and composition lead to a new cool and extremely pleasing aesthetic style.
When I flip thru some of his books or online galleries it’s amazing how many pictures you will recognize, either from magazine covers, pop albums or videos: Herb Ritts at Stanly Wise or a small biography.
Too bad he already died in 2002. Another sad loss.
Images: by the groundbreaking Herb Ritts

What is it with woman and their tiny doggies? A substitute instead having their own kids? Boredom? Or finally some creatures they have totally in their powers?

The great thing about abstract art is - that you can tell the audience almost anything and they believe it. ![]()
Still a great art by maestro Picasso.
Since Munich is flooded with Dirndls because of the Oktoberfest: Germany’s most exciting photographer works with Miss Plain Vanilla. I never understood why so many people a magicians got excited about her? She is just a nice looking Gretel.
Geisha faces are pure magic to me - maybe because I am not used to them? But the white color, dark hair, red lips and black eyes create such an unique look which is hard to ignore. Geisha’s always look a bit sad, but also unreal and almost like angel …
They must the holy muses of Nippon.
Great eyes - and Mr. Stieglitz made sure that her beauty was caught for eternity.

I like the geometric play between the pleasing female shape and already blocky & cubistic tendencies of Mr Picasso. But I have to complain that the positioning of the fan(ny) is way too vulgar even for a Picasso. On the other side you can’t be a genius everyday - and he was a ‘just’ another guy someday …
A very gentle portrait by a dedicated artist. Tina was a political activist - and I think her images show a deep love for people and beauty.
Mad people have a certain erotic schizophrenia normal people are attracted to. It’s that unwavering certainty that scares and thrills mere mortals. Brilliantly captured by the great Maestro on this painting.
Peter Lorre was a great actor - I still consider his many appearances in cheesy B-Pictures an insult to his craft. If you have ever seen ‘M - Eine Stadt sucht einen Mörder‘ by the great Fritz Lang you know what I mean.
Lotte Jacobi is one of the great Mistresses of catching light. Born in Germany - her father was already and photographer and she continued the great family tradition. Some of her fashion shots and images of celebreties like Albert Einstein are absolute classics.
About Beauty:
“Anbody who preserves the ability to recognize beauty will never get old.”
Franz Kafka
“Remember how in that communion only, beholding beauty with the eye of the mind, he will be enabled to bring forth, not images of beauty, but reality (for he has hold not of an image but of a reality), and bringing forth and nourishing true virtue to become the friend of God and be immortal, if mortal man may.”
