It is amazing how much effort people put into visiting fish and water mammals like dolphins and whales. If we continue to eat, pollute and destroy their habit as effective as in the last 200 years there won’t be much to see in a short time.

Gimme Methane or gimme death!

There are incredible creature deep in the sea who survive by using methane. Since methane is one of the biggest green house gases we should watch these guys and learn from them. There are many deep sea critters that use methane to survive and transform it into energy - something we humans need.

It wasn’t me!

Since we humans love meat, milk and cheese we need loads of cows - but their digestive system produces loads of farty methane. Cows contribute massively to the green houses gases.

The mysterious stomach of Kangaroos.

This brings us to Kangaroos and a bacteria in their stomach that hardly produces any Methane. Scientists hope they can transplant that bacteria to cows and other life stock to reduce methane production.

Gustave Dore is a giant. He created amazing illustrations and paintings. Too bad that modern publishers hardly illustrate their books anymore.

Johnny Depp has created one of the most memorable character here: the mad pirate Captain, with a twisted sense of honor and humor. I would love to see more movies with this irresistible character.

I think he has the potential to become a long lasting modern archetype, like Spock, Darth Vader or Goucho Marx.

I do hate sailing, but I do love a good ‘naval’ movie! Most of these are centered around the British Navy - and I have a weak spot for the period of British Empire anyway.

Most of the old movies tend to be charmingly naive and adventures (like Horatio Hornblower or the Sea Hawk), but only Master and Commander is both ‘modern’ (read: realistic) and exciting at the same time. And it helps a lot that no phoney love story is woven into the plot … it’s rather bloody, but full of friendship and the terrible truth about the moments of horror of war at sea.

Another classic from one of my favorite painters. This painting feels fresh and vibrant. Her nudity is natural - not extra sexy and not extra horny.

The only thing I want to see now: what happens when that wave hits her?

In recent years we have seen a huge flood of computer animated specials - and Penguins - in the movie theatres.

Cuteness doesn’t work for me - at least not to watch a whole movie. But this one is weird, cool and many times very surreal. I mean surfing Penguins are strange enough - but a surfing chicken?

It’s make fun of itself (it’s made like a documentary) and all the other Penguin, Surf and Animal flicks out there. How very refreshing and actually funny.

Excellent choice for a rainy day, Duuuuude!

The Deep is a brilliant book and web site from Claire Nouvian about deep sea creature. And they are amazing! Who needs alien when we have creatures like the Dumbo Octopus on this very planet!
